I had been toying with the idea of Butterfly for quite a while and just needed to write it, during that period of time I was halfway through reading ‘Rebel without a crew’ by Robert Rodriguez and it gave me a huge push to just get it done. I have always loved the horror genre, they are fun and intense and they give you a different buzz while watching compared to any other genre. Once I arrived back in Manchester with a rough screenplay, Mark Rigby and I amended the script and made it into what it is today. The Butterfly story has so many layers, I could have easily written a feature length screenplay showing where Butterfly came from, why she does what she does and why she changes her accents and more crazy scenes. We managed to produce, film and edit with an extremely small budget. We used what we knew we had already and I had worked with the actors on numerous occasions so I knew working with them would be simple and not need many rehearsals. We made this film as a proof of concept for the potential of a feature. There are so many legs to what I want to create for the Butterfly Saga. Butterfly the character is actually one of six girls that all live together and have been brainwashed into despising the male species by their so called Mother. People with depression or schizophrenic patients may have frightening dreams during a relapse of the illness. The nightmare disorder in the general population is estimated to be about 5%, and about 30% in a patient group with various mental disorders such as schizophrenia. With each of our prior shorts we attempted to create films that strives to please the general movie going audience. But now we wanted to make a short geared toward the genre crowd. Not everybody will appreciate or be comfortable with this film, but the ones that do will hopefully love it. When we sat down to write FINALLY, YOU we both wanted to step out of our comfort zone and create something different. Our goal was to create a film that is more European in its views on language, relationships and sexuality, with a dose of genre level action and special effects. Something that will hopefully entertain, gross out, and surprise audiences with its sensuality, violence, and romance. We aim to attend and promote as many of the festivals that choose to accept the film into their program to engage with audiences and other filmmakers. So what is to say that autonomous technology can’t lie to us? It can be corrupted and manipulated not for our benefit but for our demise, and like moths to the flame, we wouldn’t know until it’s too late.Ireland is an ancient country with traditions rooted in millennia of practice. Our folklore has survived colonisation, starvation, and emigration, but it seems it cannot outlast modernisation. Since the light of the modern world has grown on Irish shores, its old mythology is disappearing with the darkness, as well as it’s peoples knowledge and respect for the unknown and tales of Samhain (Halloween), the Dullahan, the Banshee, and many more.In this film I wanted to explore a story where Ancient Ireland lashes out in anger, manipulating our newfound reliance on technology to take its revenge for being forgotten. Our main character Fiona represents a new generation that has forgotten the old ways and is only interested in virtual connections of likes, comments, and views. Fiona soon learns that blindly trusting technology and ignoring the world around her can be very dangerous. This mirrors broader modern societal questions, while people all over the world benefit from the globe getting smaller through digital connectivity, what is being left behind in the wake of this progress?
