<video:title>A Place Among the Dead</video:title>
<video:description> - Director Biography - Juliet LandauJuliet has always been passionate about storytelling, as an actress, writer, in her prior profession as a ballerina and now as a director.Acting highlights include her role as “Drusilla” on Joss Whedon’s BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER & spin-off ANGEL, co-starring in Tim Burton’s ED WOOD as “Loretta King,” starring opposite Whoopi Goldberg in THEODORE REX and recurring as “Rita Tedesco” on Amazon Prime’s #1 show, BOSCH and as Cordelia on TNT's CLAWS.Landau’s 1st directorial effort was the short subject, TAKE FLIGHT, which explored Gary Oldman’s creative process. Her 2nd venture was the short doc, DREAM OUT LOUD, which featured interviews with Guillermo del Toro, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rian Johnson. Next up, she directed a number of music videos including “Hero” for GODHEAD. All projects were produced with her husband Deverill Weekes under the Miss Juliet Productions banner.A PLACE AMONG THE DEAD is Juliet's feature film directorial debut. She chose to make the movie searingly personal, to invite the viewer to do the same. As they say… “the more personal, the more universal.” All great work provokes conversation. This is the stuff Juliet is after: connection. communication and exploration. She stars in the venture, which includes what she likes to call, “cameos on steroids” -much larger roles than traditional cameos: Gary Oldman, Ron Perlman, Robert Patrick, Lance Henriksen, Joss Whedon & Anne Rice, appearing for the first time in a movie. Also in the works is THE UNDEAD SERIES - The only series ever to gather the who’s who, of the genre together in one place.Every one of the talented artists in A PLACE AMONG THE DEAD came back to participate in THE UNDEAD SERIES, as did Tim Burton, Willem Dafoe and many other notables.Other acting work includes starring in over 20 other features, guest starring frequently on TV, extensive voiceover work and many leading roles in the theater. Juliet has written a number of comic books. She is now penning the companion coffee table book to THE UNDEAD SERIES called BOOK OF THE UNDEAD.Landau is a member of BAFTA, Women In Film, The Alliance Of Women Directors, Film Independent & a 3X Sundance Collab alum. Director StatementA PLACE AMONG THE DEAD uses genre to explore the repercussions of growing up under the sway of narcissism and psychological abuse. We chose to make my feature directorial debut searingly personal to invite the viewer to do the same. As they say… the more personal, the more universal. My husband and I crafted this entirely scripted movie, using a meld of fact, fiction and the fantastical.I play an alter-ego version of myself, as do the following actors who have what I like to call “cameos on steroids” because they are much larger than traditional cameos: Gary Oldman, Ron Perlman, Robert Patrick, Lance Henriksen and Anne Rice, appearing for the first time ever in a film.In doing this meld, I shine a light on my life, with the hopes that the spectator opens the floodgates to become the participant.I set out to make a genre-bending, entertaining, art film AND to give voice to what has affected many, to open up a dialogue, which is EXACTLY what has been happening at our Worldwide Screening Events hosted by Modern Films. (Other Modern releases include Werner Herzog’s newest film & Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut.)EVERYONE deals with narcissism. It is THE issue of our time: whether it be a spouse, partner, ex-partner, boss, co-worker, friend, family member(s), or our world leaders, we’ve been striking an artery, not just a nerve! Each audience zoom has lasted 4 hours! Attached is the profound feedback, which has been pouring in. 🙂Along with cast, panelists from our Q & A’s include:*Dr Ramani (Psychologist, author, Premiere expert on Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Abuse)*Sylvia Lancaster (Received an OBE for reducing hate crime and teaching empathy)*Dr. Catherine Barrett (Forensic Psychologist, Professor of Psychology at USC)*Tanya Gaum (Co-founder of the Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Alliance)*Amy Marlow-MaCoy (Licensed Counselor, author of The Gaslighting Recovery Workbook)*Juliette Watt (Tedx Alum)*Ivy Kagan Bierman (Partner at Loeb & Loeb, Co-founder & President of Greenlight Women, Ent Attorney of the Year by the BH Bar Assoc, Recipient of Humanitarian Award from the Venice Family Clinic.)*Olajumoke Osode (Worked at the UN for 13 years. Strategist Coach & Consultant who specializes in navigating Toxic & Abusive Work settings with High Conflict/Antagonistic Personalities)*Wendy Blanco (LCSW, Director of Counseling Services and Trauma Recovery Peace Over Violence)*Pallavi Dhawan (The Director of Domestic Violence Policy at the Los Angeles DA’s office)I adopted to use the vampire genre, partly cause it’s an ever-enduring cultural / global phenomenon, partly due to my role on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and spin-off show ANGEL, but mostly to lull the viewer into a sense of safety, to explore unsafe and radical ideas. If I had seen a movie like this when I was 18, it would have changed the course and journey of my life. When I asked Gary why he came on board he said, “Your exploration of malignant narcissism and evil is necessary and timely. The construction and ideas are new, edgy, controversial and revolutionary… It excites me.”Hopefully A PLACE AMONG THE DEAD will excite you! </video:description>

<video:description> - Director Biography - Andrew StadlerAndrew Stadler is an animator from Dayton, Ohio recently graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design.Director StatementI've always loved monster movies. Growing up I was fascinated with Alien, the Thing, Ray Harryhousen films, and whatever I could find in the video store. It wasn't until I found my love for animation that I realized there really wasn't a lot of horror in animation, a genre that felt overlooked but waiting to be explored. When the pandemic hit, the story of Beacon began to take shape. The isolation of being at home, the confusion of what was happening, and the feeling of helplessness all became center pieces of the story. Beacon is a tale of how even the best of intentions can lead to horrifying consequences.</video:description>

<video:description>A Cave Horror Film by JJ Perez (USA) - Director JJ PerezJJ Perez, 25, was born and raised in Kingsville, TX but now resides in Austin, TX. At the young age of 5, Perez developed a monstrous fascination for the horror genre. During his high school years, he produced multiple short films to screen in front of his classmates but it wasn’t until this past year when he started production on his first feature length film, Beneath. He hopes that his new movie is only the beginning of what is to come in his career. Outside of filmmaking, JJ works full time as a tour guide at a cavern and as a Band Tech for the popular Texas cover band, The Spazmatics.Director Statement"Beneath - A Cave Horror Film" is the first ever film allowed production inside this particular Texas cavern. Many well known filmmakers, including Robert Rodriquez, have tried to gain access, but were all denied due to the protection of the cave. "Beneath" was allowed production, only due to the fact that every cast and crew member is an employee of the cavern and have all gained the trust from the management. The cast used their tour guide performing skills and incorporated it into their acting, although this was their first acting job. We hope you enjoy our film!

<video:description>Would you give her a ride? - Director Biography - Alex Mark BatherOriginally from north Wales, Alex graduated from Salford university with a BSC honours degree. Alex decided to progress his career as a Photographer travelling the world shooting campaigns. Alex then opened Temple Studio a Creative Production Company based in Manchester City Centre creating Music Videos, fashion Campaigns and a couple of experimental short films. Alex decided he wanted to progress his career even further in his life long passion of directing film.Director Statement
The screenplay of Butterfly was created whilst flying to a location shoot in Croatia, I had procrastinated about making a film for a year and had four completed short screenplays. however I wasn’t fully happy with any of them. I had been toying with the idea of Butterfly for quite a while and just needed to write it, during that period of time I was halfway through reading ‘Rebel without a crew’ by Robert Rodriguez and it gave me a huge push to just get it done. I have always loved the horror genre, they are fun and intense and they give you a different buzz while watching compared to any other genre. Once I arrived back in Manchester with a rough screenplay, Mark Rigby and I amended the script and made it into what it is today.
The Butterfly story has so many layers, I could have easily written a feature length screenplay showing where Butterfly came from, why she does what she does and why she changes her accents and more crazy scenes.
We managed to produce, film and edit with an extremely small budget. We used what we knew we had already and I had worked with the actors on numerous occasions so I knew working with them would be simple and not need many rehearsals.
We made this film as a proof of concept for the potential of a feature. There are so many legs to what I want to create for the Butterfly Saga. Butterfly the character is actually one of six girls that all live together and have been brainwashed into despising the male species by their so called Mother. They compete everyday in how many bodies they can bring back to the house like trophies.

<video:description>Lucy’s life spirals out of control when her own mind turns against her and her nightmares become her daymares. - Director Katrina GreyAs a successful actress and model, I fell victim to a psychotic stalker. The event left me traumatized, and I started to suffer from regular nightmares and headaches. While struggling to cope with my psychological trauma and the debilitating effects of strong painkillers, I found release by writing a film screenplay based on my own experience combined with my acting experience. When I met Randy Kalsi, he took me out of the nightmare world and gave me the opportunity to turn my nightmares into reality in the form of motion picture. We became a team of independent filmmakers. Randy helped me to take my destiny into my own hands. Our first movie, Daytime Nightmare, took us a little over two years to produce and complete. A lot of work, time and effort went to into making this movie happen. Our movie a full length 85 min feature film, which we financed ourselves. Because of my own experience I became a huge supporter of the Me Too Movement and supporter of all Women in Film. I can proudly say, we had as many women on set as men. I tried to have a balanced female/male cast and crew. Daytime Nightmare stays true to its name by bringing nightmares into reality, whilst following the story of Lucy. Not many people make movies about Nightmares, Nightmare Disorder or Mental Illnesses. The story of Daytime Nightmare addresses this subject in the form of a psychological drama/horror film in an interesting way so it can reach out and appeal to a wide audience who can relate to it. Nightmare Disorder is known as a dream anxiety disorder, sleep disorder characterised by frequent nightmares and involves undesirable experiences that occur while you're falling asleep, during sleep or when awake or you're waking up. People with depression or schizophrenic patients may have frightening dreams during a relapse of the illness. The nightmare disorder in the general population is estimated to be about 5%, and about 30% in a patient group with various mental disorders such as schizophrenia. My aim is to spread awareness about Mental Health and related issues and hopefully reach out to those who can relate personally to this subject. ** STAY TUNED AFTER THE SCREENING FOR A Q & A with director Katrina Grey **

<video:description>Death comes for us all. Some meet it face to face - Director Biography - Simeon GregoryDirector/Writer Simeon Gregory was born in Yakima, WA during the same year Mount St. Helens blew.First-time filmmaker out of Washington State. Fan of horror since the ’80s.Some people see horror as a stepping stone for other genres, whereas Simeon regards it as a place he wants to remain while also honing his craft.Director StatementDeath in a Box is my love note to horror in under 12 minutes. It skims the surface of morality with life and death. Death makes us question life and all its inner workings when presented to us. Would you die for your friend? It's easy to say yes until you're face-to-face with it.One thing I didn't get to fully explore in the short runtime was how the box reveals to each person when and how they're going to die. Samara has already encountered the box, and we're left to guess what happened before she brought her friend Ava. I touch on a few different areas that leave the viewer wondering.Filmed in Yakima, WA at two locations. The indoor shots were in my apartment and the outdoor was near a local winery. No CGI was used in the making of this film. A third of the budget was used for practical effects. Everything was self-funded.It takes passion and commitment to put together something like this without a big team of people. I had to wear a lot of hats to get this thing completed. I even shot a pick-up scene and the title sequence was shot after filming was completed without my DP.</video:description>

<video:description> - Director Biography - Guillermo CabotSince my childhood I have cultivated my two passions: cinema and music in a totally amateur way and with no other pretensions than to enjoy them like any other person. In a late vocational call, at the age of 44, I launched myself into writing my first feature film script: "El medio hombre que salvó un imperio" which was selected in the MadridCreaLab program of 2018 managed by the ECAM and the Consejería de Cultura de la CAM (Madrid Regional Government). The script finally derives in an ambitious miniseries project that is recently selected in the 2021 CAM grants for the development of series and is currently under development. In these three short years of cinematographic career I made my debut in the short film world with the writing and directing of "DeMente", work that accumulates to date a total of 20 selections and 4 awards at international film festivals and I also direct at the beginning of 2021 my second short film "Habibi", whose post-production has recently finished and now begins its journey in the festival circuit. Director StatementDeMented is my first work behind the camera and I wanted to create something which was closer to realism than fantasy or terror. In a very small space and with very limited resources we tried to create an atmosphere in which the impossible would be possible.</video:description>

In 2012, John attended Norman Jewison’s Canadian Film Centre Writer’s Lab where he wrote the short film COLD FEET that screened numerous festivals including Fantasia and sold to AMC-IFC Networks. In 2014 John wrote and directed his first feature film – the award winning THE SUBLET. It premiered at Whistler Film Festival and won the awards for Best Actress and Best Cinematography at Blood in the Snow Film Festival in Toronto. John followed that up with the intense thriller short SHE CAME KNOCKING. It was awarded Best Short at the Canadian Film Festival in Toronto where it premiered. It also won Best Short and Best Actress from the NSI Online Film Festival as well as a Platinum Remi at WorldFest-Houston and an Audience Choice Award in his home town of Miami at the FilmGate NOLA Film Festival.Prior to writing, John won the Borsos prize of Best Cinematographer at the Whistler Film Festival for his work on the feature SK8 LIFE, which also screened at Sundance.Director StatementTen years ago I wrote the words: couple develops cannibal sex fetish on honeymoon down on a piece of paper and have been pitching it ever since as Do Not Disturb. The concept developed into a relationship story using cannibalism as an allegory for emotions. After being selected by Fantasia’s Frontières to pitch at Ventana Sur’s Blood Window Market in 2015, I realized that while the carnage and gore were important, it was the couple’s relationship that connects the film to the audience. The idea that being in a toxic relationship is like being eaten alive was something people easily identified with. With Do Not Disturb I drop the viewer into the lives of a newly married couple going through relatable, almost mundane issues and slowly pull them into a fantasy world induced by narcotics and play with their minds as an unreliable narrator. The bizarre becomes easy to digest, because it creeps up on you. Both in terms of style and story, Do Not Disturb is a film that can satisfy the visceral demand of a horror audience as well as translate over to a broader audience with its relationship story.</video:description>

<video:description>Dir: J.R. Rivera (USA) - Director J R RiveraDirector Biography - J.R. RiveraJ.R. (Jamie) Rivera has been making short films for over 5 years. His parents were from Puerto Rico, he was born in Chicago but raised in Phoenix. He attended Scottsdale Community College between 2004-2008 to study his lifelong passion, filmmaking. His first two films, BRIGHT EYES and FATHERS have been in numerous festivals and have won a handful of awards. He evolves with every film he makes; building up the resources to soon produce his first feature film.Director StatementMy co-writer, producer, and main star Aaron Seever and I have so far ventured into drama, suspense, horror, romance, and comedy with success at the film festival market for each of our endeavors. We, as filmmakers, are always trying to push our craft forward instead of settling for what is familiar. With each of our prior shorts we attempted to create films that strives to please the general movie going audience. But now we wanted to make a short geared toward the genre crowd. Not everybody will appreciate or be comfortable with this film, but the ones that do will hopefully love it. When we sat down to write FINALLY, YOU we both wanted to step out of our comfort zone and create something different. Our goal was to create a film that is more European in its views on language, relationships and sexuality, with a dose of genre level action and special effects. Something that will hopefully entertain, gross out, and surprise audiences with its sensuality, violence, and romance. We aim to attend and promote as many of the festivals that choose to accept the film into their program to engage with audiences and other filmmakers. We are extremely proud of our short film.</video:description>

His short films have been accepted in a variety of regional festivals and his podcast BRASS won the Nick Danger Audio Drama award and is available for listening wherever you listen to your podcasts. Director StatementSometimes when you're in one place for a long time, you decide to be as creative as you can within those very specific parameters. Thanks be to loved ones who support us in such endeavors--and allow us to transform our small townhouse apartment into a greenscreen studio for several days.We shot everything for this, and two subsequent episodes of Nightmoor Manor, in three days of frantic up-and-down-stairs filming in October, then planned on post-production work through the next three months--quite literally as fast, and as slow, as we could manage.Episodes 2 and 3 of NIghtmoor are in the final stages of post-production.</video:description>

His feature film debut "Aphasie" (Aphasia) is currently in post-production.Director StatementOur goal with "O" is to make the feeling of addiction palpable and to show it with all of its consequences. <video:description>Eyes are the windows of the soulless - Director Biography - Carl TimmsCarl Timms is a director and producer who made his narrative directing debut in 2017, writing and directing the award-winning horror short STILL, becoming a smash 4 million view YouTube hit. STILL also gained an Amazon Prime release as part of the Blood Clots anthology and TV airings in the US. In 2017 he formed Dark Matter FIlms with writer, Mark Brendan, where they are developing a slate of projects. OFF GRID marks their first release together and Carl's second narrative short. Starring James Cosmo and Alison Steadman, the film was released to festivals at the end of 2019.Carl works as an Executive Producer at international communications agency DRPG . With 20 years of production experience, he has also directed and produced a WW2 documentary and a series of extreme sports documentaries and music videos.Director StatementOff Grid is a film about mental illness brought on by the pressures of the world and the isolation of the protaganists and how a loving relationship built over decades can be jeaporidised in a simple moment of misunderstanding; yet it is also a post-apocalyptic genre thriller designed from the opening chaotic scenes to hoodwink the audience into thinking they are watching a standard genre piece. The powerful twist at the end is designed to pull the rug out from under the whole film, making the viewer question everything they saw. This makes Off Grid rewatchable and bold in its attempt to pull a Sixth Sense style game changing twist in just 20min.</video:description>

Online Film Award May 2022)Director, Writer and Cinematographer in NÆXO (2022; Best Short Drama - Medusa Film Festival 16th Season)Director StatementI wrote this story around 2014, it used to be a short tale. I was inspired by a couple that I met some years ago, the classic tale of the Odyssey, and the fascination I have with creepy dolls. It was until 2018 that I rewrote the story as a script, and one year later I filmed an exercise in a Film Workshop around it. I portrayed Ulises, but I was not satisfied with the result. So, in December of 2021 I decided it was time to finish this story. As the Director and Cinematographer, I wanted to make an homage to early horror films of the Nineteen & Twentieth Century: Nosferatu, Bela Lugosi's Dracula, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. But at the same time, I wanted to bring a psychological and thriller atmosphere more characteristic of our modern folk horror. Please enjoy the result of 7 years of a dolly nightmare tale, but remember (as Ulises said in the film) this is not the Maribel, the creepy doll movie :)</video:description>

<video:description>Dir: Mark Clauburg (USA) - Director: Mark ClauburgMark began his career as an educator, teaching high school and college video production in the early 2000s. After earning a terminal degree in instructional technology, he transitioned to leadership positions in higher education. He is a principal member of Grey Machine Films and has directed several award-winning films, including The Last Visit and My Dad and Bob Todd.Director StatementPreparation is a film based on a short horror story published in the early 2000s. The author approached me two years ago about the possibility of collaborating on a project in the future. I asked him to send me his favorite of all the short stories from his catalog and was immediately blown away by the insane twist at the end of Preparation. After writing several films with extended dialogue scenes, we challenged ourselves to tell a story more visually and with a bombastic film score. My DP Dustin Ward and composer Peter Lisowsky were more than up for the challenge. I also brought on board special effects/makeup artist Rose Ripley, who created an incredibly realistic prosthetic arm and handled blood duties. As our team's first foray into the horror genre, we are pleased with the result.Stay tuned after the screening to watch an amazing Q & A with Directer and Crew!

<video:description>You will never be found - Director Biography - Shane W. BrennanShane is an Irish Writer/Director, who graduated with an Honours Degree in Multimedia from DCU in 2010 where he focused his studies on video production. His group thesis project, “Pashli – Make A Difference”, was awarded first-class honours, and won the best university media project in Ireland in 2010, via The Digital Hub’s “Best In Show”. https://www.siliconrepublic.com/start-ups/category-winners-in-best-in-show-chosenAfter university, Shane moved into the world of marketing and advertising, but regardless of what position he held, Shane would use his love of video/film to elevate the brands he worked with. It was such a passion of Shane’s to make quality video production accessible to brands, that he co-founded MODO Creative with his creative partner Aaron Chalke in 2014, a moonlighting venture that allowed him to scratch his production itch in parallel with his media planning 9-5 role. Then in 2015, a dream came through with MODO Creative producing its first TV ad for McDonald’s, one of the biggest brands in the world, for the launch of their first Irish burger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1xkm-mzlm4Today, Shane continues to create advertising as the Resident Director & Creative Director at Foe. He has gone on to direct, write and produce films for brands such as; Lidl, HSE, An Post, Waterford Stanley, PwC, KBC, AIB, and Liberty Insurance. While Shane has been making videos/films for over a decade, “Shadowban” makes his first true directorial debut. This film is a completely original story that planted itself in Shane’s head over 4 years ago. He is delighted to be able to share this film now and hopes people enjoy it, as well as consider the very current themes at the heart of the story. All of Shane’s previous work can be found on his website www.shanewbrennan.com Director StatementBeing from the Irish countryside I have been subjected to the unease of stopping at a temporary traffic light in the dead of night. All alone in the dark, bathed in red, making sure the doors are locked and contemplating what could happen. Despite this discomfort, I was also paralysed by the social obligation not to break the rules even if no one was watching. I must wait until the all-knowing traffic light tells me it’s safe, but why should I trust the traffic light over my own senses? In today’s world, we blindly trust technology, which is ironic because we use technology to lie. We lie about who we are, how we look, and how we feel every single day. So what is to say that autonomous technology can’t lie to us? It can be corrupted and manipulated not for our benefit but for our demise, and like moths to the flame, we wouldn’t know until it’s too late.Ireland is an ancient country with traditions rooted in millennia of practice. Our folklore has survived colonisation, starvation, and emigration, but it seems it cannot outlast modernisation. Since the light of the modern world has grown on Irish shores, its old mythology is disappearing with the darkness, as well as it’s peoples knowledge and respect for the unknown and tales of Samhain (Halloween), the Dullahan, the Banshee, and many more.In this film I wanted to explore a story where Ancient Ireland lashes out in anger, manipulating our newfound reliance on technology to take its revenge for being forgotten. Our main character Fiona represents a new generation that has forgotten the old ways and is only interested in virtual connections of likes, comments, and views. Fiona soon learns that blindly trusting technology and ignoring the world around her can be very dangerous. This mirrors broader modern societal questions, while people all over the world benefit from the globe getting smaller through digital connectivity, what is being left behind in the wake of this progress? Should we stop, look up and connect with the world/people around us instead of always looking further afield? </video:description>

<video:description>Dir: John Cheney (USA) - Director John CheneyJohn Cheney's films have screened at festivals across the world, including LA Shortsfest, Kerry International Film Festival, and Crossroads Film Festival. A consummate storyteller, Cheney is the author of the novels City of Spies and The Apocalypse Men, as well as several short stories. John Cheney earned a Master of Fine Arts in Film Directing from Chapman University. He is an adjunct professor of Film and Humanities at Utah Valley University.Director StatementNightmares can have all sorts of effects on our waking life. They might cause us to lock all the deadbolts, hug a loved one tighter, or even seek therapy. Mine drive me to create. "Sirin" is the second project (following my second novel) directly inspired by my dreams. In March 2019, I awoke from a dream so unique it has stayed with me since. In the dream, something that I--and most of us in the modern world--rely on not only turned unreliable, but malevolent. The dream was so visceral that I have taken some of the dialogue and imagery straight from that vision.During the process of post-production, the world turned on its head. I started to wonder, what good is a film about nightmares if our world is representing a nightmare now? But the journey of Maggie, the protagonist in the film, is one where everything she has relied on for convenience, comfort, and understanding of her world is stripped away. If she's ever to get out of her predicament, she'll have to rely on herself. In that sense, "Sirin" is very much a film of our time.</video:description>

<video:description>Dir: Martyn le Roux (South Africa) - Director Martyn le RouxMartyn le Roux is an award-winning playwright from South Africa. His radio plays have been broadcasted and published locally and he has received numerous media awards in the last couple of years including the Liberty Award for his radio play Bloedlyn (Bloodline).Numerous other Radio nominations and awards followed: Best Script, Best Producer, Best Actor and Actress. He hails from Kimberley and lives in Paarl in the Western Cape area also know as the Cape Winelands. He studied Drama and Theatre Arts at the University of the Orange Freestate.Always wanting to tell his stories and produce a film he decided to turn his novel, Die Pelsloper, (The Skinwalker) into his first film.Director StatementSo many stories to tell, so little time. The story of Die Pelsloper/ The Skinwalker, came to me in a hotelroom at three in the morning. I just had to tell it, for it was a different story from all the many cliché versions of the werewolf myth I've seen in my life. Nothing like it has ever been attempted in South Africa, least of all in Afrikaans! So I set out to produce this film with zero everything. Zero budget, zero equipment, crew or actors. Didn't even have a camera! But then things just started happening, and people gave of their time and talents to tell the story of Samantha and her cursed life. It was produced over a period of two years under very difficult circumstances in South Africa, in an economy where everyday things were collapsing just a bit more, but we did it.I hope we can inspire others to tell their stories as well no matter how impossible it might seem...

<video:description>Dir: Takeshi KUSHIDA (JAPAN) - Director Takeshi KUSHIDABorn in 1982. Takeshi KUSHIDA has been a member of Pyramidfilm in Tokyo.WOMAN OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS is his first feature film.VOICE (2017) – Jury’s Stellar Award (Grand Prize) – Black Maria Film FestivalTHE EARTH WAS BLUISH (2015) - GRAND PRIX - United For Peace Film FestivalI AM A CAMERA (2013) JURY PRIZE - GR Movie FestivalREINCARNATION (2008) JURY RECOMMENDED WORK - Japan Media Art FestivalHide and Seek (2005) GOLD PRIZE - Bilbao International Short and Documentary Film FestivalKANNNON (2004) SPECIAL MENTION - WRO Media Art BiennaleFLOW (2003) FIRST PRIZE - Lille International Short Film FestivalDirector StatementPhotography has changed immensely with the development of social media. At one time, photographs were taken so we would have memories. Now, they are taken to show others ideal views of ourselves with the help of advanced photo retouching technology, and we can become not our natural selves but idealized versions of ourselves. And life becomes difficult as we try to make our lives into our idealized versions of it, losing all reality and sincerity.I believe that what we should say in a film in this era are the following: to love oneself for what we are, and to build our self-esteem on truth, to cherish our inner values that others might not see in us, to love ourselves together with the existence of others.People often vacillate between their natural selves and their idealized selves. We cannot hope to become everything in our ideals, that would be too much for us. However, in attempting to do so, we fall into confusion and despair, distress and hopelessness. We lose the way and the true meaning of life. This film was created to celebrate humanity through our attempts to find our true selves in this complex world. To love oneself requires more effort than to love another human being. However, when we meet others who need us for their own efforts to achieve happiness and sincerity, we help ourselves in the process. “WOMAN OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS” is a story of the joyful transformation of two lonely people who are awakened to love and humanity through caring for each other.
